Constituent Value of  Hawthorn berry

Flavonoids, of the leaf and flower, and procyanidins of the fruit, are thought to be the most pharmacologically active constituents of hawthorn. Other constituents include triterpene acids and phenolic acids.

Berries, leaves, and flowers of hawthorn are phytochemically similar in composition, differing primarily in the ratio of specific flavonoids and procyanidins present. Berries are rich in hyperoside, while leaves contain higher levels of vitexin-2-rhamnoside. Was detected significant levels of vitexin-2-rhamnoside in flowers.

Hawthorn contains around 1 to 2% flavonoids, oligomeric proanthocyanidins (1-3%), saponins, phenolic acids (chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid), 2-(2-Phenylethyl) chromone derivatives (in the flowers, leaves and buds), amine (phenethylamine, metoksyfenetylamin, dopamine, acetylcholine and tyramine) and triterpenes based on ursolic acid and oleanolic acid.

Increasingly, modern studies are pointing to the hawthorn plant as a valuable therapy for cardiovascular disease (CVD)
